YMCA Healthy Living Center issued the following announcement on Oct. 1
With 2020 being an Olympic year, interest in competitive swimming is expected to soar, especially among young people. Millions of young swimmers across the country will be glued to the TV, watching heroes like Katie Ledecky, Caeleb Dressel and Simone Manuel go for the gold in Tokyo.
Your children can get their own start in competitive swimming right here at the Y. The DSMY Marlins, our unified swim team, maintains practice sites at the Wellmark Y, Waukee Y, Walnut Creek Y, South Suburban Y and Indianola Y. Our program for kids ages 6 and up is “child-centered, coach-driven and parent-supported,” says Frankie Hanson, director of aquatic operations for the YMCA of Greater Des Moines.
Not every kid is going to grow up to be an Olympic swimmer, but all children can realize the benefits of competitive swimming: physical fitness, endurance, improved cognitive skills, discipline, perseverance, teamwork and many more. There are lots of events, which means lots of opportunities for every team member to find a place to shine. Most important of all, kids have fun and form friendships that can last a lifetime.
The DSMY Marlins’ fall/winter season is just getting underway. Open tryouts are scheduled throughout the month of October at various branches. If you don’t see a tryout date listed at the branch of your choice, contact the swim coach there for more information about joining the team.
