Spiti – The Bum Who Travels

Spiti Valley, admirably called “a world within a world” by Rudyard Kipling. It is characterised by stupefying beauty and quaint solitude in its expansive extent. The Spiti valley lies on the Tibetan Plateau, one of the highest elevated tablelands on earth. It is at an altitude of over 3500m.

Spiti valley is a high-altitude region encompassing valleys of river Spiti and other rivers that join the stream. It is situated in Lahaul and Spiti districts in Himachal Pradesh. The weather is extreme due to the high elevation. Spiti has a plethora of amazing destinations to relish the flavour of geography and lifestyle in Spiti. 

Travellers love to visit and explore various locations in Spiti. The roads remain closed for 7-8 months due to heavy snowfall at the high passes. Hence, there’s only a small window left for tourism.

1. Important towns to not miss

a) Gue

Gue houses the mummified remains of a llama in a glass chamber. 

b) Nako

Nako is a small village in Hangrang Valley, in Kinnaur. It has an ancient monastery called the Nako Monastery and a lake called Nako Lake. 

c) Dhankar

Dhankar village hosts the old Dhankar gompa which is a 1200 years old monastery perched with mesmerising views.

a) Tabo to Meditation Centre

Duration: 1 hour

Difficulty: easy

b) Dhankar village to Dhankar Tso

Duration: 2 hour

Difficulty: easy/ moderate

c) Lhalung to Kibber

Duration: 2-3 days

Difficulty: moderate to difficult

d) Chicham

Chicham is a village situated at a high altitude and a trek to that village is not an easy one. It is marked by a steep rise and dangerous elevation.

e) Pin – Parvati trek

Duration: 7-8 days

Difficulty: difficult

3.) Monasteries

a) key monastery

Situated at an altitude of 4112 m, Key monastery is one of the biggest gompas popularly known for its splendid buddha shrine, ancient manuscripts and books. It resembles a fort in architecture and seeks inspiration from Chinese designs. It houses an assembly hall and Tengyur room. 

b) Lhalung Monastery

It is an ancient monastery founded by a Buddhist monk and is considered a hub of Buddhist teaching. It is called the Golden Temple as it is embellished with golden leaf deities. 

c) Gondola Monastery

Gondola Monastery is popular for its wooden idols and shrines. It is situated at the confluence of Chandra and Bhaga. 

d) Tabo monastery

Tabo monastery consists of 9 temples of Tara and Buddha Maitreya decked with several interesting features like stucco sculpture, wall paintings and other works. 

4) Stunning villages

a) Kibber

Kibber is a wonderful hamlet situated in the Spiti valley region with houses arranged in a quaint manner. The scenario is incredible. The village is atop a high elevation and is marked by extreme weather conditions. 

b) Losar

Losar is situated at the juncture of Peeno and Losar streams and is very close to the Indo-China border. Losar village is engulfed with strange solitude and pleasant peace. 

5) Baralachala pass

Baralachala pass is widely known for its dangerous height and is a nexus for roads between Lahaul and Ladakh. It is situated on the Manali-Leh highway in Zanskar. 

6) Lakes

a) Chandratal

Chandratal is a gorgeous water body with blue reflections of the sky running deep into the depths of the Tal. The shimmering waters of Chandratal are surrounded by lush verdure. 

b) Suraj Tal

Suraj Tal is another beautiful lake in spiti. Suraj Tal offers an incredibly sane and serene sight to the delight of beholders. Nature’s embrace cannot be felt anywhere else. 

c) Dhankar Lake

The kind lake of Dhankar is a beauty to cherish and a phenomenon worth witnessing. The sight is mesmerising but not an easy delight for the trek undertaken to reach Dhankar is extremely arduous and dangerous. 

7) Komik

It is 20 km away from Kaza. It is a small village with awe-sticking beauty and is a pleasure to delight in. The village is situated at a height of 18000 above sea level and feels like paradise on earth. It is an ideal destination for someone who loves to trek and explore the limits of their capability. The weather in Komik is extremely harsh because of the high elevation, and freezing temperatures. 

8) Kunzum Pass

Kunzum pass is located in the Kunzum range and is situated at an altitude of 4590 m. The pass bridges the distance between the Kullu and Lahaul valley and Spiti valley
